Honda CRF150RB Review

I have owned two Honda CRF150RB models over the years, so this review comes from real ownership rather than a quick test ride. The goal here is to help you decide if this bike is right for you or your rider, or simply give you a clearer picture if you already have one in the garage.

CRF150R vs CRF150RB differences

The CRF150R and CRF150RB are very similar bikes, but the details matter. The standard CRF150R runs smaller wheels with a 17 inch front and 14 inch rear, while the CRF150RB is the big wheel expert version using 19 inch front and 16 inch rear wheels. The RB also has a slightly longer wheelbase and firmer suspension settings, giving it a more planted and race ready feel.

Who the CRF150R and RB are for

This bike should not be confused with the CRF150F trail model. The CRF150R and RB are true motocross race bikes built for young riders chasing performance and progression. It is designed for riders who want to compete, not cruise.

Age range

The CRF150R platform is built for the Supermini and 85cc racing classes, generally suited to riders aged 12 to 16. The small wheel version tends to suit younger riders, while the CRF150RB big wheel is better for older teens. Age alone is not enough though, as height, confidence, and riding ability all play a role.

Rider size

Seat height is one of the biggest deciding factors. The CRF150R has a seat height of around 32.8 inches, while the CRF150RB sits higher at roughly 34.1 inches. Rider inseam matters just as much as overall height, and proper fit is critical for control and confidence on a race bike.

Rider weight

While Honda does not publish a strict limit, the CRF150R and RB are generally designed around riders weighing roughly 80 to 120 pounds. Heavier riders can ride it, but suspension setup and riding style become more important.

Where the CRF150R excels

Reliability often comes up in discussions, and in my experience it is misunderstood. This is a high revving race engine, so it naturally requires more attention than a trail bike. Ride it hard and maintenance matters. Treated properly, it holds up well.

Valve adjustment and maintenance

Valve checks are not nearly as frequent as some online comments suggest. With regular oil changes and sensible riding, trail or practice use can see 50 to well over 100 hours before major engine work is needed.

Other strengths

  • It runs on straight fuel since it is a four stroke

  • It is light for a four stroke motocross bike

  • It produces more usable torque than most 85cc two strokes

  • With minor changes, it can even be enjoyable for light adult trail riding
