Yamaha YE-01 Racing Concept: A New Era of Electric Motocross
Yamaha Unveils the YE-01 Racing Concept: The Future of Electric Motocross
Yamaha is accelerating into the electric future with the Yamaha YE-01, an EV-based motocross prototype built to push performance in a new era of off-road racing. Officially introduced as the Yamaha YE-01 Racing Concept, this project is being developed in collaboration with strategic partner Electric Motion (EM). The goal is clear: prepare the YE-01 Racing platform to contest the upcoming electric motocross category, MXEP, which will showcase prototype electric bikes at selected rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship.
This move signals Yamaha’s next step in competitive electric development. After participating in the EV class of the FIM Trial World Championship with the electric prototype TY-E, as well as involvement in Formula E, Yamaha is now turning its attention to electric motocross, where power, durability, and rider feel are tested at the highest level.
A Strategic Partnership with Electric Motion
To accelerate progress, Yamaha is working closely with Electric Motion (EM), following Yamaha’s investment and strategic partnership established in November 2024. The partnership connects Yamaha’s racing heritage and chassis development expertise with EM’s deep experience in electric motorcycle technology. Together, they aim to explore and advance EV-based innovations specifically for competitive off-road riding.
The Yamaha YE-01 Racing Concept is a live development project, not simply a styling exercise. It is being refined with the intent to compete in MXEP once the class becomes part of the official FIM Motocross World Championship calendar. The MXEP category is expected to run alongside MXGP events across multiple European rounds, giving fans a first real look at prototype electric motocross machines in a world championship environment.
Built on Championship-Proven Foundations
To deliver the praised Yamaha riding feeling, a sense of control and stability, the Yamaha YE-01 Racing Concept uses a best-in-class chassis shared with the 2026 YZ450F. This provides a familiar, high-performance handling platform while the powertrain transitions to electric performance.
Developed specifically for motocross, the YE-01 features a liquid-cooled electric powertrain designed to offer MXGP-level performance. To bring the electric power delivery closer to a traditional Yamaha ride feel, the motor is paired with a hydraulic clutch. Battery placement is also engineered to optimise the centre of gravity, similar in philosophy to the reverse-head engine layout used in the YZ450F. Following Yamaha’s approach across production models, further tuning and control are available through power modes and rider aids.
What’s Next for YE-01 Racing
Development of the YE-01 Racing project will continue with a series of tests involving Yamaha’s motocross test riders. These sessions will help refine performance, durability, and overall ride character as Yamaha prepares the Yamaha YE-01 platform for the competitive demands of the MXEP championship.
With the Yamaha YE-01 Racing Concept, Yamaha is doing more than exploring electric motocross. It is laying real groundwork for the next generation of high-performance EV racing.
